AI Is Not the Disruption. Your Response to It Is.
The conversation about AI has settled into two camps. One insists it will take everything. The other insists it will change nothing. Both are wrong. Both are reactions, not responses.
What makes AI different from previous technological shifts is not the speed. It is the tangibility. A loom replaced hands. A spreadsheet replaced ledgers. AI replaces something harder to name: the sense that certain kinds of thinking belong only to humans.
That is uncomfortable. The discomfort is not a signal to retreat.
The Skill No One Is Naming
Most discussions of AI literacy focus on tools. Learn ChatGPT. Learn image generation. Learn prompt engineering. These are useful. They are also surface-level. Knowing how to use a tool is not the same as knowing what the tool means.
The deeper skill is change navigation: the ability to see a shift, assess what it means for you, and respond with intention rather than fear. This is not technical. It is cognitive. It can be learned. It can be practiced.
Women who have done our workshops often arrive expecting to learn about technology. They leave having learned about themselves. That is not a coincidence. The tool reveals the person using it.
Freezing Is a Response
When people say they are “not good with technology,” they are not describing a permanent condition. They are describing a freeze response. Something new appears. It looks complicated. The instinct is to step back.
Stepping back is not wrong. It is natural. The question is whether you stay there.
One of the first things we do in our workshops is have women open a tool and simply describe what they see. No instructions. No goals. Just observation. What do you notice. What do you wonder. What feels unfamiliar.
The shift happens quickly. Within minutes, the freeze thaws. The tool becomes an object of curiosity rather than threat. This is not because the tool changed. The person changed.
What You Already Know
If you have navigated a career change, raised children, managed a household, volunteered in your community, learned a new skill as an adult — you have already practiced change navigation. You have felt the discomfort of not knowing. You have found your footing anyway.
AI is another version of this. The specifics are new. The skill is the same.
The women who thrive in our programs are not the ones with technical backgrounds. They are the ones who have learned, at some point in their lives, that discomfort is temporary. That confusion is a stage, not a destination. That asking questions is not a sign of weakness. It is the mechanism of learning.
One Question to Ask Yourself
Not “what will AI do to my job.” Not “should I be worried.” Not “is it too late to learn.”
Ask: what do I want my relationship with change to be.
Do you want it to be something that happens to you. Or something you navigate.
The first option costs nothing in the short term. It costs agency in the long term. The second option costs discomfort in the short term. It returns confidence in the long term.
There is no third option. There is only the choice between reacting and responding.
The women who choose to respond do not become different people. They become more fully themselves. That is the part no one talks about. Learning to navigate change does not make you someone new. It makes you someone who trusts herself to handle what comes next.
